Pilot Lights
i just got propane but none of my pilot lights will light in the house.?
hot water heater, stove, wall heater nothing. whats wrong?
k we’ve been holding the button down on everything and still nothing.
It is common practice in the industry that if a tank is completely empty the driver will turn the tank valve off! This is to prevent gas from flowing into the building until someone is ready to relight the pilots or fire the appliances. Especially if no one was home when the delivery was made. Could this be the case? Under the dome cover on the tank will be a service valve that your gasline is connected to. Make sure it is turned counter clockwise all the way out and “backseat” the valve. It is normal that a little gas could escape around the threads while you turn this valve. That’s why we backseat it to prevent leakages.
If the piping is long between the tank and appliances, you may have to bleed the lines. The easiest way is to use two pipe wrenches to loosen the coupling at the water heater a bit and wiggle the connection until you hear flow. Make sure you have no sources of ignition nearby before you do this! It may take 5-30 seconds to bleed the air out. Once you smell gas, close the connection quickly! Use soap and water to leak check the connections. Use a piece of cardboard or something to wave some air around the area to dissipate the gas. Wait a few minutes, and then try and light the pilot. It should light fairly quickly after that.
I can’t stress this enough!!! DO NOT attempt to bleed the lines if you are not 100% comfortable doing it! The potential for a fire here is very real, so call a professional to handle this if you need to! There is no room for mistakes when it comes to fuels and safety!
Good Luck with it!
